HAT FORUM: Sat Feb 11, OISE 252 Bloor Street West

HAT Forum
Saturday, February 11, 11am  OISE 252 Bloor Street West
Topic: Consequentialist and rule-based ethics
Facilitator: Moses Klein

Ethical philosophies are commonly divided into two types, those that evaluate specific actions based on their consequences, and those that formulate general principles to be applied in a broad range of circumstances. Which approach do you tend to take in making moral decisions? Do you see the two types of ethics as necessarily in conflict? Can you think of moral dilemmas you have faced when rule-based and consequentialist thinking suggested different choices to you? If you like rule-based ethical thinking, what sort of rules appeal to you? If you like consequentialist thinking, what sort of goals motivate you?
