HAT Forum - Is Moderation a Virtue?

  • The 519, Rm 303 519 Church Street Toronto, ON, M4Y 2C9 Canada (map)

When ideas are labelled as extreme, especially in politics, the connotation is typically dismissive. But is it wise to avoid extreme positions?

Do centrists tend to be more open-minded than radicals? More tolerant? Are there differences in style (as opposed to content) that distinguish moderate approaches from extreme approaches?

Would you rather live in a setting in which political debate typically are about details within a broad consensus, or one in which a broad range of ideas compete?

Is there such a thing as moderation in the extreme?

These questions are being framed in a political context. Are there other contexts in which similar questions would make sense?
