HAT Forum - Extremism: How do Humanists Respond?

Extremis: The Humanist Response

The proposed topic of discussion for this week is extremism. With the rise of extremists on both sides of the political spectrum, and with religious and ethnic tensions on the rise in the world.

Polling released by market research firm Ipsos in August 2016 found that 60 percent of Canadians feel like the government is doing enough to protect them from terrorism, and that 61 percent of Canadians feel safe in Canada. That same month, an Ipsos poll found that nearly half—or 47 percent—of Canadians feel desensitized to news of terrorist attacks and violence. (Sources: Ipsos, Ipsos)

What policies and practices can humanists advocate for in order to combat extremism within our society.

The questions proposed to frame the discussion are:

  1. What forms of extremism are currently manifesting within western society?
  2. What has caused the current upswing in extremist views?
  3. What are the best ways to minimize extremist views?
  4. Do the methods for combatting extremism differ based on the type of extremism faced?
