We hear a lot about the US corrections and prison system but what is the current state of Canada’s prisons?

Corrections Service Canada states the following as its mission:

The Correctional Service of Canada ( CSC ), as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.

  1. Why do we send people to prison? Are we hoping to punish? Rehabilitate? Educate? Even the term correctional services Canada speaks to the public relations notion

  2. What are the fundamental objectives and goals for this system in our society? Can we do better?

  3. How does the Corrections system serve certain distinct populations? Youth? Women? Indigenous peoples?

  4. How are they doing Corrections in other countries and could those approaches work effectively here?
