Race is generally understood to be a social construct, and yet is a pervasive topic in our discourse. Why is this? What do we understand by race? What characteristics do we recognize as racial, and why? How is race related to other dimensions of ethnicity such as language, culture or religion? What role does the concept of race play in our society? Is there hope for a post-racial culture, and how do we get there?
