HAT Forum - "Pipelines - Pros and Cons"

  • The 519, Rm 304 (check the lobby screen) 519 Church Street Toronto, ON, M4Y 2C9 Canada (map)

Oil pipeline expansion in Canada is stalled on account of a court ruling that found insufficient consultation with First Nations and consideration to endangered killer whales.

Support for the pipelines comes from different levels of trade organizations, government representatives (PM, Liberal and Conservative parties, Alberta, …), vested populations (cities and native nations along the routes).

Opposition to the pipelines comes from activist concerned with the environment, government representatives (NDP, Green party, British Columbia, …), vested populations (cities and native nations along the routes).

 1)            Pro pipeline construction arguments:

-          economic development (jobs, transfers to other regions)

-          absence of environmental benefits derived from not building the pipeline (given the current economic structures, oil demand will be covered from other sources in absence of Canadian source oil)

-          without the pipelines, the US is profiting from Canada’s lack of infra-structure

-          Canada is better equipped to lead the development of oil extraction safeguarding the environment than other oil reserve nations (such as Venezuela, the Middle East, Russia, …)

Are these valid points?

2)      Con pipeline construction arguments:

-          damage to the environment (water pollution, wild life)

-          condones the use of fuels derive from fossil

-          creates economic “vacuum” conductive to the development of new technologies

Are these valid points?
