This week’s topic is: Navigating Nutrition - Food Myths and Facts, Introduced by Catherine Francis.
I started by asking Co-Pilot for top 10 food myths. Here is what I got:
1. Myth: Carbs make you gain weight
2. Myth: Eating fat makes you fat
3. Myth: Fresh produce is always healthier than frozen
4. Myth: Detox diets cleanse your body
5. Myth: You need to drink 8 glasses of water a day
6. Myth: Microwaving food destroys nutrients
7. Myth: Gluten-free is healthier for everyone
8. Myth: Brown sugar is healthier than white sugar
9. Myth: You should avoid eating after 6 p.m.
10. Myth: Organic food is always more nutritious
Then I tried ChatGPT. Some were the same or similar. But more than half were different:
3. “Eggs raise your cholesterol dangerously.”
4. “Dark chocolate is always healthy.”
5. “Butter is better than margarine.”
7. “Sea salt is healthier than table salt.”
8. “Red meat is bad for you.”
9. “Dairy causes mucus or worsens colds.”
The ChatGPT list is somewhat suspect, as it is doubtful that many people subscribe to some of these alleged "myths", at least not in the categorical sense.
But the point is that nutritional information and guidelines are difficult to navigate and keep changing. The United States is poised to issue new food guidelines. Here's the lead on a recent article in the Guardian: "Robert F Kennedy Jr, the health and human services (HHS) secretary, is planning to issue guidance encouraging Americans to eat more saturated fats, contradicting decades of dietary recommendations and alarming experts".
Is this really what is needed in a nation facing an obesity crisis? Even globally (taking into consideration the poorest countries), obesity now exceeds underweight for the first time among school-age children and adolescents.
Since I liked Copilot's answers better on food myths, here are some discussion questions from Copilot. It took a few minutes to come up with these (I even had to ask what was taking it so long).
