“Is Life Fair and/or Should It Be?”
Presented by Glen Erikson
In an ideal world, we might imagine we could be happy all the time; everyone could be healthy and fulfilled with rewarding activities and relationships. We could have a life that makes sense, and that you are surrounded by reasonable people.
But in reality, life is often unpredictable and a struggle; people around you seem to behave like idiots; sometimes life is disappointing and painful.
“That’s not fair!” sounds like something a child would say, but do we not carry some emotional triggers of this feeling through our adult years?
Have you felt upset when you were looking forward to a big event - birthday or vacation trip, and something “rained on your parade”
Have you felt misunderstood or dismissed at work or among your peers?
Have you felt angry when things in your life were going along smoothly and you hit a bump in the road with an illness, accident or loss?
Do you sometimes want to blame others — your friends, family, partners, organizations, the government or “the fates” for the crap you have to deal with?
When you are feeling let down, do you want to complain to somebody? Do you head to the fridge, to the liquor cabinet, or to the distractions on tv?
At the other end of the fairness scale, have you sometimes pondered how fortunate you were to have your basic needs met, when others nearby or far away were struggling with their survival; with war, famine or plague?
Do you think fairness a realistic goal, or should we accept our fate and just get along the best we can?
Do you feel your life is good luck, or do you feel you have worked for and deserve what you have?
Let’s discuss…
