“Is The Forum an Echo Chamber or an Idea Lab?”
Presented by Richard Dowsett

Tim Urban of the “Wait but Why?” blog-site has established the concept of an Idea Lab designed to contrast with the concept of the Echo Chamber. He describes each of these as intellectual cultures that have very different values and behaviors.

Echo Chamber - a safe space for a sacred set of ideas and people who express them, a dangerous space for opposing ideas and people who express them.
- Confirms existing beliefs.
- Argumentation is viewed as threatening and aggressive.
- Those with non-conforming views are suppressed or ejected.
- There are clear no-go areas.
- Characterized by low-rung (needs and desires-based) thinking, starting at a chosen conclusion then building evidence that supports it, or, even worse, requiring no evidence at all.
- Eco Chambers are fragile environments – dissent is suppressed to protect them.
- Breed unearned conviction as the parroting of core values is encouraged and rewarded.
- A community united by an existing shared understanding.
- A mainly SOCIAL exercise where expression of and loyalty to “sacred ideas” is rewarded.
- Echo Chambers are emotional candy stores.
- On a macro scale, an Echo Chamber reduces thought to the lowest common denominator.

Idea Lab: a safe space for people, a dangerous space for ideas.
- Looks to establish truths.
- Argumentation is viewed as play and exploration.
- All views can be subjected to scrutiny, which is welcomed and encouraged.
- There are few no-go areas.
- Characterized by high-rung (rational) thinking that starts with an open question, creates and tests a hypothesis then arrives at knowledge based on the evidence
- Idea Labs are anti-fragile environments – dissent and argument are encouraged to stress ideas, make them better and in the process improve participants’ thinking and bias correction.
- Humility is thrust upon you as there is room for both agreement and disagreement.
- A diversity of views is welcomed.
- Individuals united by a shared search for truth and understanding.
- A mainly INTELLECTUAL exercise where new thought and disconfirmation are valued and rewarded.
- Idea Labs are intellectual gyms.
- On a macro scale, an Idea Lab is a super brain, smarter than any of its members.

Questions:

1.      Based on the above definitions, how is the HAT Forum like an Echo Chamber or like an Idea Lab?

2.      How does a given intellectual environment become a Echo Chamber or an Idea Lab?

3.      The Forum addresses a wide range of topics. Are there topics better suited to an Echo Chamber format than an Idea Lab one?

4.      What are some of the drawbacks of the Idea Lab concept?

5.      In your opinion, how should The Forum change its intellectual culture to become more effective at accomplishing the mission of HAT: “to grow Humanism, a secular, rational and compassionate worldview”?
