“Loneliness”
Presented by Tanya Long
We live in an age when opportunities for social connections seem greater than ever - social media, apps for meeting people, our devices. Yet many say we are suffering an epidemic of loneliness. The Surgeon General recently published an article in the NYTimes about the negative health consequences of loneliness such as anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, heart disease and dementia. The UK and Japan have Ministers of Loneliness. So what is going on here?
1. What are some factors that contribute to the feeling of loneliness in today's society?
2. How do you differentiate between being alone and feeling lonely? Can solitude be a positive experience?
3. In what ways can technology both alleviate and exacerbate feelings of loneliness?
4. What are some effective strategies for coping with loneliness and fostering meaningful connections with others?
5. Is it harder to make friends as an adult? If so, why?
6. How does social media impact our sense of belonging and connection with others?
7. Are there any cultural or societal stigmas surrounding loneliness, and how can we address them?
8. Can loneliness be a driving force for personal growth and self-discovery? If so, how?
9. How can communities and support networks be strengthened to combat loneliness?
10. Are there any potential benefits or drawbacks to seeking solitude as a means of dealing with loneliness?
11. How do relationships and meaningful connections play a role in combating loneliness, and what qualities are essential for nurturing these connections?
12. Is this a particularly "first world" problem and if so, why?
13. Should Canada have a Minister of Loneliness?
Join us to share your experiences, thoughts and questions about loneliness.
