The US operation that extracted Maduro from Venezuela to face trial in the US, and subsequent statement from the White House, raises a number of concerns. Let us consider the following questions:
Is the US acting as if it were above international law?
What concerns does the focus on Venenzuela’s oil fields raise?
What other countries could be the target of a similar operation?
How should Canada respond to the extraction operation and subsequent threats to other countries?
Does Canada need to find other allies and trading partners?
How should other countries in the western hemisphere respond the US making it a “sphere of influence?”
Might Russia and China follow the US’s example, and claim that their neighbors fall in their respective “spheres of influence,” making them free to take actions against their neighbors without respect for international law?
