Stereotyping is the act of assuming that all people in a particular group share the same characteristics, behaviours, beliefs, or abilities.
A stereotype can be positive, negative, or neutral. Stereotypes are sometimes but not always derived from or rooted in characteristics of some (or many) members of a particular group. Even in those cases the use of stereotypes can be unfair to individual members of the group who do not fit the particular stereotype. In other cases, stereotypes are not based on genuine characteristics of the group, but on bigotry or malice, for example.
Discussion Questions:
How do you define a stereotype?
Where do stereotypes come from?
Have you ever been stereotyped? On what basis? How did it affect you?
Can stereotypes ever be positive, or are they always harmful? Why?
Do stereotypes influence the way you treat other people?
Do media and especially social media play a role in creating or reinforcing stereotypes?
How can stereotypes lead to prejudice or discrimination?
Why is it important to judge people as individuals rather than by stereotypes?
