HAT Forum: Building Bridges: How to Establish Dialogue Across Fundamental Disagreements

How to Establish Dialogue Across Fundamental Disagreements

Humanists as a rule respect differences of opinion, but is that a principle that we can apply effectively in practice?

1.     Do you try to maintain friendships with people who disagree with ideas (e.g. political, religious) that are core principles to you?

2.     Where there are fundamental issues of disagreement, do you prefer to avoid the subject or to establish a relationship in which you can discuss your disagreements openly?

3.     Have you ever had to abandon a friendship because of fundamental political or religious disagreements?

4.     The Street Epistemology movement (https://www.streetepistemology.com/) advocates trying to promote critical thinking by Socratic questioning; rather than openly expressing disagreement, ask why someone believes what they believe. Do you ever engage in this kind of interaction? In what contexts?
